City Year Graduate and ED Selected as Obama Leader for the 2019 Africa Programme
We are proud to share that our Executive Director, Daylene van Buuren was selected as an Obama Leader for the 2019 Africa programme. City Year South Africa has always invested in young people to create a generation of leaders for South Africa and our Executive Director used this platform to share the power and impact of youth service. The Obama Foundation selected 200 leaders from a pool of 20,000 incredible leaders from across 45 countries in Africa and brought the 200 leaders to Johannesburg from the 10-15 July to kick-off their yearlong participation in the leadership development program.
This Obama Leaders platform created an opportunity for leaders from across Africa to learn more about the incredible work being done across Africa. The Obama Leaders also spent a day serving with our 2019 service leaders, learning more about the work we do in schools to improve the academic support for learners and support the schools to achieve their operational goals. On the 13th July as part of the Mandela Month call to service, our service leaders and Obama leaders spent the day at Zandspruit Primary School, painting, gardening, and distributing gift packs to learners at an outing that Former US President Obama shared on Instagram.
