How this works
Each year, we recruit new cohort of service leaders that will be serving in schools and organisations. We are looking for highly talented and committed young people between the ages of 18-25 to serve a year with City Year. Do you have what it takes to be a great service leader?
The Application Process
Before you get started, make sure you are eligible to apply.
We look for the following 4 C’s during our screening process: Competencies (skills), qualities of Character (leadership potential and commitment to service), aptitude for Collaboration (teamwork), and Critical thinking skills (problem-solving ability). In order for your to apply, you need to make sure that you meet our criteria. Here is a list of eligibility requirements:
- You need to be between the ages of 18-25 years old
- You must have a minimum matric (grade 12) pass
- You must be a citizen of South Africa
- No criminal background
- You need to be drug free (this includes marijuana/dagga)
- Must be able to communicate well in English
Our City Year extensive recruitment process includes the following stages:
Step 1: Complete the application form online and submit all required documents
You will complete the application online and will need to submit and upload the following documents: Updated CV, Copy of your ID, Copy of your matric certificate/statement of results (certified copy).
You will receive a response from our recruitment team within 4-8 weeks after submitting your application.
Step 2: Attend or virtually join the Open House Briefing
If you are successful in Step 1, you will be invited to an open house virtual briefing. The open house is a two hour briefing sessions to give you more information about the program and the expectations. This is an opportunity for you to ask questions as well. You will be given an opportunity to select an interview date and time.
Step 3: Interview
If you are invited to an interview, you need to be well prepared to share why you are an ideal candidate for our program. You may be asked to send a video based on the questions we send you, alternatively you may be scheduled for a live video call with a panel of interviewers or an in-person interview.
This is an opportunity for City Year to learn more about you and for you to present yourself and your ideas. Remember to dress professionally and prepare well for the interview, even if the interview is virtual.
Step 4: Selection committee and feedback
The City Year selection committee will assess and score all your application materials and our recruitment team will contact you with final feedback.
Please note that we do random drug testing and criminal background checks during the process and during the program, should you test positive, you will be removed from the process or the program.
You may also be invited to complete additional maths and computer literacy assessments as part of the application process.
Should you not hear back from us within 8 weeks, consider your application unsuccessful.
