According to STATS SA, Q1 of 2019, the current youth unemployment rate for ages 15-24 years is at 55.2%. in response to the youth unemployment crisis and the barriers young people face to access the world of work, City Year created the Amathuba Two Month Internship Programme to assist with transitioning graduates to the world of work and connect them to opportunities and networks they may not have access to on their own.
The 2019 service leaders will be starting their Amathuba ”Two month internship” programme from October till November 2019. The Amathuba Work readiness programme is a two month on-the-job programme that places Service Leaders (participants) in different companies and organisations as a bridge to connect them to opportunities while simultaneously preparing them for the world of work through real, on the job, learning experiences. This opportunity is designed to test the skills acquired by service leaders during their term of service at City Year, for service leaders to explore available opportunities in the industry and encourages service leaders to use this platform as a gateway towards their preferred career.
We are excited to partner with various companies and organisations to provide on the job work experiences for our 2019 service leaders. In 2018, we achieved an 80% placement of our graduates, we look forward to strengthening this number in 2019.

The Amathuba Programme aims:
- To prepare and assess service leaders’ readiness for the world of work.
- Allow service leaders to practically apply the skills they acquired during the term of service.
- Allow service leaders to explore available opportunities in the industry.
- Encourage service leaders to use this opportunity as a gateway towards their preferred careers.
- To achieve above 80% work placement of graduates and/or other meaningful engagement.
