The focus of City Year South Africa’s service initiative is to place young volunteers, or Service Leaders as we call them, in primary schools and or with other service sites, where they act as tutors, mentors and role models to children.

We currently partner with 7 primary schools, 2 high schools, an early childhood development centre and 1 NGO, situated across Gauteng, which are primarily located in the following areas

City of Johannesburg

(Soweto, JHB CDB and Alexandra)

West Rand (Kagiso)

The main component of the work that we do in primary schools, is a programme called the City Year Children’s Club. This is an after-school programme that focuses on 3 main learning components, namely; literacy, numeracy and life orientation. There is also a homework support structure built into the programme. The goal is to improve learners academic performance and self-esteem, and ultimately keep them on track to finish school in matric.

As well as the after-school programme, City Year South Africa Service Leaders also spend time in class during school hours to provide one-on-one support to learners who are struggling, as well as support to teachers.

City Year aims to support a positive school climate, in which learners are given the opportunities they deserve to learn and be successful.
